What Is an Oshibori Towel?
The oshibori is a moistened cloth offered to guests as they arrive. The tradition began during Japan's Edo period, when travellers were greeted at inns with damp towels to clean their hands and face after long journeys. The word comes from shiboru, to wring.
Over time the gesture became something more than practical. It became a way of saying: we noticed you, and we prepared for you. Today the oshibori is used in restaurants, hotels and private homes around the world as a quiet mark of attentive hospitality.
Our Black Edition takes this centuries-old ritual and gives it a modern edge. The towel is wrapped in black packaging that feels deliberate, contemporary, and a little unexpected. Inside, the towel is woven from 100% organic long-staple cotton at 600 GSM. Dense, soft, quick to heat or chill. For those who care about how things look and how they feel.
Why the Black Edition?
Black packaging changes the mood. Against a white tablecloth, on a dark slate tray, under low lighting, it immediately feels intentional. It is a visual cue that says something about the place offering it.
Design with intent. Black communicates confidence. In a restaurant or bar where atmosphere matters, the packaging becomes part of the experience. Guests notice. They photograph it. They talk about it.
Materials that hold up. The towel itself is OEKO-TEX certified organic cotton. No synthetic dyes, no chemical softeners. The 600 GSM terry weave absorbs well and the reinforced edges survive commercial laundering cycle after cycle.
Two material options. Available in organic cotton or our premium organic microfiber. The microfiber is softer, lighter and quicker to heat or cool. Our signature choice for modern hospitality.
Scented with intention. A subtle fragrance developed by a professional perfumer in the USA. No synthetic chemicals.
Less waste. Each reusable oshibori replaces hundreds of disposable wipes. Good hospitality and less landfill.
How to Use Them
Half the pleasure is in the preparation.
Warm. Roll the towel tightly, dampen with water and a drop of essential oil (bergamot and cedarwood work well), then heat for 20 to 30 seconds in a microwave or oshibori warmer. Present on a tray or in bamboo tongs. Best in cooler months and evening service.
Cold. Dampen, roll and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. A chilled oshibori on a warm evening, especially with a hint of yuzu or peppermint, is the kind of small thing that makes a real impression.
At the bar. In cocktail bars, presenting an oshibori with the first drink sets the tone. The black packaging suits low-lit, atmospheric venues naturally.
After use, launder at 60°C or above. The towel keeps its softness and shape through repeated high-temperature washes.
For Restaurants and Hospitality
In hospitality, the details compound. A warm towel before dinner. A cool one at the pool. These are the moments guests mention in reviews and remember weeks later.
The Black Edition suits modern Japanese restaurants, cocktail bars, boutique hotels with moody interiors, upscale steakhouses and nightlife venues. Present on a dark tray under ambient lighting. It becomes part of your identity without requiring a word.
Our towels are designed and developed in the USA, and we ship domestically, so restocking is fast and reliable. Just consistent supply shipped quickly to your venue.
The economics are straightforward. A 12-Pack covers daily rotation. Each towel withstands hundreds of commercial wash cycles, so the cost per use is far lower than disposable alternatives. Major hotel groups and Michelin-starred restaurants use oshibori towels for exactly this reason: high guest impact, low ongoing cost.
For Home
An oshibori at home is a small ritual that shifts the pace of your evening.
Heat one with a few drops of lavender or eucalyptus and press it to your face after a long day. Use it as a pre-shave towel, a post-workout cool-down, or a warm compress for tension in the neck and shoulders. The 600 GSM cotton holds heat and cold well, and is soft enough for daily use on the face.
The black packaging also looks good in a bathroom. Particularly in spaces with dark tile, matte fixtures or concrete surfaces. Keep a set rolled on a tray by the basin. It is a small touch that changes the feeling of the room.
